Retail Inventory Shortage Leaves iPhone Duo Shoppers Turned Away
The global debut of Apple's first foldable device has led to crowded stores, but limited stock has prevented many walk-in purchases.

Apple's first foldable smartphone hit store shelves worldwide on October 23, but a scarcity of physical units has left many would-be buyers empty-handed despite lengthy queues. Apple Store locations were packed with customers eager for hands-on demonstrations of the iPhone Duo, yet the company's prior warning regarding stock levels has proven accurate for retail visitors. The limited availability at brick-and-mortar locations has created a situation where many consumers are being redirected to digital channels rather than purchasing in person.
Lines formed outside Apple stores overnight, with shoppers hoping to secure a device without a prior appointment. However, staff are reporting that inventory is too low to accommodate the demand for walk-in purchases. Employees are directing disappointed customers to the Apple Store app, with updates on in-store inventory scheduled for 10 a.m. ET on October 24. The shortage of walk-in inventory appears to be a direct consequence of the anticipated popularity surrounding the device's introduction.
In a press release issued this morning, Apple shared images from launch events occurring across the globe. The company confirmed that on October 23, the iPhone Duo made its debut at Apple Store locations worldwide. According to Apple, customers filled the stores while team members invited them to experience the first foldable iPhone. The retail teams are providing hands-on demos and personalized shopping support to those visiting the locations.
Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, is celebrating the launch at Apple's flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York. He is joined by Apple's retail executive Vanessa Trigub. The presence of senior marketing leadership at the New York flagship suggests the significance the company places on the device's reception in major metropolitan markets.
Apple CEO John Ternus is marking the occasion in Austin, Texas, at the Apple's Domain NORTHSIDE location. He is appearing alongside retail chief Deirdre O'Brien. Reports indicate that Ternus toured Apple's offices in Austin during the week. The timing coincides with the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix taking place in Austin this weekend, where Apple serves as the exclusive F1 streamer in the US.
Apple is providing support for customers attempting to purchase the device, though the method has shifted away from immediate retail transactions for those who did not arrive with a reservation. The company is not offering the iPhone Duo for walk-in purchase at this time. Staff are advising those who did not secure a device today to check the Apple Store app tomorrow for inventory details.
