Anthropic Backers Sit on Billions Ahead of Massive Public Listing
Early and late-stage investors in the AI giant are poised for significant returns as the company approaches a potential $2 trillion valuation.

Two trillion dollars. That is the figure analysts are currently pegging for the upcoming public listing of Anthropic, a valuation that promises to reshape the wealth landscape for its investors. The AI lab’s entry into the public markets, anticipated to occur within the current year, is set to create a historic windfall for both venture capital firms and individual backers who placed their chips on the company during its earlier stages.
Even before the official IPO, the stakes held by key investors are already substantial. At the company’s most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, many of these backers already hold positions worth billions of dollars. The trajectory of these assets suggests that the final public offering could multiply these gains further, cementing Anthropic as one of the most lucrative investments in the technology sector to date.
The most striking individual example is Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google. Schmidt invested in Anthropic’s Series A round back in 2021, when the startup’s valuation stood at a comparatively modest $461 million. According to PitchBook data, he currently owns approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion, a testament to the explosive growth the firm has experienced since its early funding rounds.
Late-stage institutional investors have also seen massive appreciation in their holdings. Iconiq, an investment firm that wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year, entered the market when the company was valued at $183 billion. That substantial bet has since grown to a value of $17 billion. Analysts suggest this position has the potential to double again once the IPO is completed, highlighting the continued confidence in the company’s market position.
Venture capital firms that have been involved in multiple funding rounds have similarly benefited. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested more than $1 billion in the company over time. Their stake is currently valued at $14 billion. Meanwhile, Sequoia, a renowned VC firm, made its first investment in Anthropic earlier this year, entering at a $380 billion valuation. Their $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership, meaning their capital has already more than doubled since the initial deployment.
Other notable players include Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher. The group initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million to their position. This strategy has resulted in a stake worth billions of dollars today. It is worth noting that Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm, but the original investment remains a significant asset for the group.
Perhaps the most dramatic multiple belongs to Spark Capital. The firm, which holds the only known board seat at Anthropic, invested $75 million during the same 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at just $5 billion. That position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to reach a current value of $7 billion. This exponential growth underscores the massive upside captured by investors who entered during the earlier, lower-valuation phases of the company’s development.
The convergence of these individual and institutional gains paints a clear picture of the financial momentum surrounding Anthropic. As the company moves toward its public debut, the focus shifts from private equity appreciation to public market performance. The sheer scale of these pre-IPO valuations indicates that the listing will not only be a significant event for the tech sector but also a defining moment for the investors who backed the AI lab’s rise to the top.
Looking ahead, the market will closely monitor how the $2 trillion valuation holds up against public scrutiny. For the backers named here, the coming months will determine whether their current billions can be converted into even greater sums on the open market. The story of Anthropic’s investors is one of early conviction and late-stage confidence, both of which have been rewarded handsomely in this rapidly evolving AI landscape.
